A Tragic Transformation Just One Year Has Brought in the United States

In late October 2024, the landscape was completely distinct. Before the US presidential election, considerate citizens could admit America's significant faults – its injustices and disparity – but they could still see it as the United States. A democracy. A place where legal governance carried weight. A nation guided by a dignified and ethical leader, despite his advanced age and growing weakness.

Currently, this autumn, many of us barely recognize the country we live in. People alleged as undocumented migrants are rounded up and pushed into transport, sometimes blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the presidential residence – is being destroyed to build a lavish event space. The president is targeting his opponents or supposed enemies and demanding legal authorities hand over an enormous amount of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are deployed to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The military command, renamed the Department of War, has practically rid itself of regular press examination while it uses what could amount to close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Institutions, attorney offices, news companies are buckling under the president’s threats, and rich magnates are handled as nobility.

“The US, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the planet's foremost free society, has fallen over the edge into autocracy and extremism,” a noted author, commented recently. “Ultimately, more quickly than I thought feasible, it did happen in America.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. And it's challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how severely declined we have become, and the speed at which it occurred.

Nevertheless, we understand that the leader was duly elected. Following his profoundly alarming first term and despite the cautions linked to the awareness of Project 2025 – despite the president personally stated openly he planned to rule as a tyrant just on day one – enough Americans chose him rather than Kamala Harris.

As terrifying as the present situation may be, it's more daunting to understand that we have only been three-quarters of a year into this administration. What will an additional three years of this downfall find us? And what if that period becomes something even longer, as there is no one to restrain this leader from opting that a third term is essential, possibly for national security reasons?

Admittedly, all is not lost. There are midterm elections next year that could create a new balance of power, if Democrats recapture the Senate or House of parliament. There exist public servants who are trying to impose a degree of oversight, such as representatives currently launching an investigation concerning the try to money grab by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote three years from now could initiate the path toward restoration precisely as last year’s election put us on this regrettable path.

There are countless citizens protesting in public spaces of their cities, like they performed recently during anti-authority protests.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the dormant powerhouse of America is stirring”, exactly as before post-McCarthyism in that decade or amid the sixties activism or throughout the Nixon controversy.

During those times, the unstable nation ultimately corrected itself.

The author states he understands the indicators of that resurgence and sees it happening now. For proof, he points to the recent massive protests, the extensive, cross-party resistance to a personality's dismissal and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to accept the defense department’s demands they solely cover what is sanctioned.

“The dormant force consistently stays asleep before specific greed grows too toxic, a particular deed so contemptuous toward public welfare, some brutality so disruptive, that the giant has no choice but to awaken.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may prove to be right.

In the meantime, the big questions persist: will the nation return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its position internationally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My cynical mind suggests that the latter is accurate; that everything could be lost. My optimistic spirit, though, convinces me that we have to attempt, by any means we can.

Personally, working in journalism analysis, that’s about urging journalists to adhere, more thoroughly, to their purpose of holding power to account. For different individuals, it could mean engaging with political races, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to defend electoral access.

Under twelve months back, we lived in an alternate reality. In the future? Or three years from now? The truth is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to attempt to continue fighting.
