A devastating detonation at a security post in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir has led to the deaths of nine people and injuries to thirty-two additional people, according to police declarations.
The incident occurred when a stockpile of seized explosive materials unintentionally detonated during processing activities.
Sequence of Events
The blast happened on Friday evening at the Nowgam police station, where explosive materials seized from the Faridabad area in the northern territory of Haryana province were being held provisionally.
Local law enforcement head stated that the blast materials were pending scientific analysis when a "deeply regrettable" incident during processing led to their detonation at approximately 23:20 local time.
Police Statements
Security forces asserted that this was an "unintentional explosion" and as opposed to a terror incident. "Alternative theories regarding the reason of this event is unnecessary," highlighted the police chief during a press briefing.
The police station endured significant harm from the detonation, with neighboring structures also being affected by the intense detonation.
Consequences and Fatalities
Multiple vehicles were "engulfed in flames and transformed into ashen remains, with fragments distributed across the site," according to authority statements.
"The intensity of the detonation was such that some physical fragments were retrieved from close-by residences, approximately between 100 and 200 meters from the security post," mentioned an official source.
Most of the fatalities were law enforcement personnel, along with forensic personnel, two evidence documentation specialists, and a tailor who was accompanying the group.

The area's Administrative Head expressed condolences and declared that an investigation had been commissioned into the devastating event.
"I have directed a investigation to ascertain the origin of the unintentional blast. Deeply anguished by the fatalities of important persons due to exceptionally devastating unintentional explosion at Nowgam security post in Srinagar city. My commiserations to the mourning loved ones. I wish for speedy recovery of the wounded," stated the official on online channels.
