Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
