The starting XI for the next Test match is yet to be decided less than a day out from the opening delivery in the Gabba, with a final assessment of the playing surface necessary before the hosts finalize a side that may yet include Pat Cummins.
Acting Captain Steve Smith Hints at Possibility for Shock Recall
Stand-in captain Steve Smith fronted an expectant media on Wednesday but was unable to reveal the precise composition of the XI. Nonetheless, he did not rule out a surprise recall for Pat Cummins, who was unavailable for the first Test due to a back complaint.
“He has appeared pretty good to me, the way he’s been bowling in practice,” the stand-in captain remarked. “Naturally games are different intensity, but he’s coming along well, he is aware of his condition.”
Late Inclusion Remains a Possibility
The pace spearhead was initially left out in Australia’s 15-man squad for the next encounter, but came along to the Gabba to continue his recovery with the team. Smith said he was on the right track and may be included at the last minute.
“We’ll wait and see but as stated, he’s close,” Smith continued. “He has completed everything really well the past few days and we’ll see later today when we assess that surface whether he’s in contention or not.”
Selection Conundrums Ahead if Cummins Plays
A comeback for Cummins, which was in doubt just a recently, would lead to Perth debutant Brendan Doggett or even spin veteran Nathan Lyon losing their place.
Smith refused to guarantee Lyon’s place in the team when pressed about the spinner's inclusion.
“Undecided,” he replied. “We will assess the wicket as I said and make a decision from there. Here’s a place Nathan has done really well in the previous matches, he’s a top performer. We’ll weigh up the alternatives and see how we go.”
Batters In Contention for Recall
Josh Inglis will also have to see whether he has made the team. The player is the prime option to enter the lineup in place of the unfit Usman Khawaja, with the left-hander touted to take the opening spot again after his century in Perth.
“Several scenarios are under consideration,” Smith said. “The decision is pending what the pitch is like and from there we’ll determine a lineup.”
“[Inglis] is clearly a very aggressive player,” Smith added. “Impressed on his debut in Sri Lanka, he’s been in really good form... He handles pace very well. So if he gets the nod I’m sure he’ll do really well for us.”
Last-Minute Decision Timeline
In addition to Inglis, the all-rounder is in contention to earn a recall at No 6, on the expectation that Head partners as opener alongside Jake Weatherald, and Cam Green shifts to number five.
Smith indicated a final decision on the XI could be made later on Wednesday, but alternatively, it may wait until the Thursday. Play gets under way at the Brisbane Cricket Ground at two in the afternoon (1500 AEDT) on Thursday.
