Seconds before the announcement, a nervous idea darted through Rory McIlroy's mind. He admitted he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star again."
"It's been a tremendous night for golf," McIlroy declared. "The sport was celebrated in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and hopefully we can use that."
On this occasion, however, there was no dramatic upset. The verdict was decisive, allowing a delighted McIlroy to reflect on a memorable evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were crowned the top squad.
Non-Stop Adventures
But rather than attend the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already focusing on his upcoming event. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to Florida.
"It's been a frantic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break over Christmas."
Unfinished Business
Nevertheless, McIlroy insisted he has no plans to slow down, notwithstanding completing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a more to give in me," he asserted.
"Further big titles, season-long rankings, international events, that's the aim. But provided that you feel like you can keep improving and have the hunger, that's the essential part."
Team Triumph
Elsewhere, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also applauded golf's stellar night and his great friend's award.
"These become the times that will stay with us forever so to get the people's vote for that is truly special," Fleetwood said. "Seeing Rory receive that award, I think he has earned it so much."
When reminded that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"
Future Goals
Fleetwood hopes to finally win his maiden major next year but he recognized McIlroy still desires more success. "Provided that you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to improve," he noted.
United Hopes
Before McIlroy left, one final question was raised. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be tempted to do it again after his recent triumphs?
"If they halt the flow of four goals at home," McIlroy responded with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a little bit of hope around."
After a 2025 for the ages, it's understandable that Rory McIlroy is looking on the upside.
