Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
